Transpersonal Photographs of Psychedelic Pioneers
My longtime friend and occasional collaborator Marc Franklin will be having an exhibition of his amazing and distinctive “transpersonal photographs†at SPF: A Gallery in Culver City from October 13 – December 31, 2011.
The opening reception on October 13, 2011 promises to be an amazing event.
Franklin’s unique and revealing photos feature 72 portraits of Psychedelic Pioneers — 12 of them as giant 24 x36 inch metal prints i.e. photographs sublimated directly onto aluminum.
Marc says, “In 1988 I photographed Albert Hofmann in Santa Rosa, CA with this photographic archive in mind. After Albert gave me his blessing, I jetted off to the East Coast to photograph Richard Evans Schultes, Ram Dass, and old friend Allen Ginsberg. Returning home to San Francisco, I began a telephone marathon to set up appointments for a gazillion portrait sessions. The collection has now grown to over 200 prominent scientists, researchers, clinicians, chemists (licit and illicit), counterculture activists of all stripe, writers, poets, musicians, artists…â€
Aside from being an exploration of these psychedelic missionaries, Franklin will use other photos, among them nature photos and pictures of Edward Teller and Ralph Nader, turning the entire exhibition into a sort of psychedelically inspired portrait of 20th (and 21st) Century life.
